BERENJENA - IS HERE!!
Saturday, December 29th

TT + TT + TT

As 2007 comes to an end, I came back to Shanghai to spend Christmas with friends and family. The Tokyo trip was refreshing, but I'm back to work at the adFunture studio, working towards 2008.

When our staff was cleaning up the warehouse, we found some old stock, so we are working on how to deal with them. Is funny when you see stuff that you thought you don't have anymore... is not so funny when you realize you should pretty much fire the stock-keeper who told you you were out of stock! :-) Kidding. Anyways, we put them up on our online shop for those who didn't get the chance to purchase them back in da day. It looks a bit steep, but when you factor in the courier fees, etc, that's about right. Have fun, boys.

I'll check in with you all in a bit.

Thank you all

This Tokyo trip has been quite colorful, and interesting for me. I'd like to thanks all the friends who took time out to show me around and took care of me; Hiroshi, Endo, Devilrobots, Jun, Suzette, Yone and the Pain O Chokolate cew.

And a special thanks to Suitman Young Kim, have a Merry Christmas, Young. I'll see you again soon.

这次日本之行,早有约好几位朋友碰头。自己太多年没来日本了,跟从没来过不差多远。很感谢这次帮忙的朋友们; Hiroshi, Endo, Devilrobots, Jun, Suzette, Yone & the Pain O Chokolate cew。但更要特别感谢Young,他花了很多时间陪我。太不好意思了。感动呢。

Lynatro and Fraser were at the table as well.

Tomonori-san, pleasure to meet you. I'll see you again soon enough.

Endo. Devilock.

Met up with Endo, of Devilock, for coffee this afternoon. Some of you might have heard about it, but we'll be releasing a Devilock piece this X'mas. Something black with a little silver on top.

I really enjoy collaborating with Devilock, because this was one of few labels that I paid attention to since 5 years ago. Palmboy was one of the most successful urban vinyls back in da day. Their clothing are very cool as well. More ill stuff coming out this season. Pay attention, guys!

Endo, see again soon.

这次约好Devilock的Endo在日本一聚。有趣的话题和想法不断。

BNE and D*Face at one of the gates going into Harajuku district. BNE is everywhere here, this guy got busy in Tokyo.

Young Kim @ Shibuya

Young took me to this nice restaurant serving organic food tonight in Shibuya.

After dinner, we walked around for a bit as he showed me some cool places. As Young went into a public washroom, I was waiting outside at a street corner. Lighted up a smoke, and just wanted to take a few night photos. All of a sudden, I got surrounded by 4 policemen. 4. Said a few words to me in Japanese, and of course, my only response was "sorry, I don't speak Japanese"... but I kinda understood their intention... they want to search me. I showed them my ID, only my HK ID card, I left my passport at the hotel. I thought, ok, no biggie, HK cops do the same thing. NO. They want me to empty out all my pockets... ALL. I was wearing a M-65, there were alot of pockets.. All this time, I still have my smoke between my fingers, I asked (in body language) if I may drop my cigaritte, they signaled "no". Ok, so if the smoke in hand, I had to take out everything in my pocket. I had alot of shit in there, so, they looked through them all. All the inner pockets in my wallet as well.

All this time, Young was still in the loot. As he came out, he saw what was going on, and was a bit shocked. Next thing you know, they want to search him too. So us two were just standing there getting searched.

After the policemen realized that I'm not a Chinese mob, they kindly said "sorry, but this area is dangerous, alot of people carry knifes." How did I understand this last phase? Because he was now speaking to me in ENGLISH!!!! I went "O.....K. Thank you."

Interesting night... Young and I were laughing on our way to the next coffee spot.

I learned 3 things tonight:
1) Carry your passport.
2) You can't smoke and walk in Tokyo. They have marked out areas on the streets where you can stand there to smoke.
3) While smoking on the street without a passport on you at night, wearing a pair of sunglasses is not an good option.

Fun night eh, Young?

Speaking of sunglasses, picked up this pair of limited edition Transformer sunglasses by TOMY Japan for Shark. Only 100 pairs made, the black purple mix looks hot.

Shark, hope you dig this.

Tokyo / Neighborhood x Supreme

Arrived Tokyo for the first time in over 10 years. Checked out Harajiku this afternoon. Shibuya was very very crowded, even more than Causeway Bay in Hong Kong.

是日东京到着.

Made a stop at Neighborhood and Supreme in Harajiku. Just in time to pick up a few collabo items between NBHD and Supreme, including this Vans Chukka titled "Troopers of Tomorrow". I can see myself coming back to this place... :-)

HK / Nike JP / Fiberops

After dinner and drinks with Frank from W+K Shanghai, who was also in HK at the same time I was, we came across this alley in Central near Soho, graf-filled. PEZ left his mark here.

Frank, I'll see you back in Shanghai in 2008. Have a merry one.

Met up with the Nike Japan's Design Team in Hong Kong. They suggested to going to this "food court" type eatery in Happy Valley. I had never been there before, and apparently, the food there is great. Most of the dishes that were served were very good. Is just fun when visitors bring you to a new place to eat in your hometown.... :-) The most special dish that night has to be the Beef with Strawberries and Pineapples. Pineapples in Chinese dishes is not a surprise, but strawberries?? This was a first.

Rockin' this Fiberops denim lately. Very nice, Aly. You well?

HK / Gabriel / Angolz

Made a brief stop in HK, just chillin'. With the 2007 catalog being all finished and shipped out, we had a few days to relax and then dive right back in there to prepare for 2008. Didn't really setup any appointments in HK, I figured I could use a few days off. I did manage to catch up with a few old buddies from my childhood days, and just shoot the shit about anything and everything. Which was good.

Gabriel Li was one of the buddies I did caught up with. He's the CEO of online retail business ANGOLZ.Com, and no, this isn't one of those bubble bursting dot-com businesses. Angolz has been a solid online business for the past 4 years now and still growing strong. We had an interesting discussion over drinks about how toys are still one of the best moving product categories for online retail businesses. I found that quite amusing.

Triumvir

The A/W collection of Triumvir looks ill. Definitely a change of direction in terms of theme, is much darker this season. Thanks to Brandon for sending a few pieces over for X'mas.

AFFA x Fenom

This arrived by way of Zero (Trinity). Mad thanks. AFFA x Fenom denim. One of 2 colorways released. The collaborative label AFFA by Hiroshi and Jun (Undercover) has always been one of the most sought-after Japanese labels, known to only release from time to time and in very limited quantities. This sort of creative partnerships is what's driving the streetwear scene in Asia.

AFFA x Fenom 之入手.

REX T.

Some goodies were waiting on my table when I came back to the studio. Always happy to find boxes on my desk instead of bills. Here's something new, a new tee from our friend Rex Yu's new apparel line in Shanghai. Rex is a singer that is on the uprise on the Mainland entertainment scene, but at heart, he digs streetwear and sneakers just like alot of us. Is cool see him tries to come out with his own stuff, and see what happens. Of course, he's not the first entertainer coming out with his own line, but I like the fact that these t-shirts are actually well made. The graphic on the front of this particular piece was felt and use black crystals as surroundings. He opted to send me the logo tee, but I've seen other graphic variants and they were nice.

Thanks Rex, and I hope you do well with this new line. Cheers.

回到工作室收到俞思远的REX's GAME Tee. 用上felt-hair的graphic print. Cool. 谢谢思远.

Evolving Styles - London

"If Banksy's new art in Bethlehem is too much of a stretch for global art lovers, the UK’s seminal live contemporary and street art auction, Evolving Styles, returns to London this Christmas offering a rare chance to invest in works of art by the biggest names in the movement. Original works by the likes of Blek le Rat, FAFI, Dave Kinsey, Faile, DAIM, Xenz and New York graffiti legends, DAZE and CRASH will go under the hammer, while audiences watch world-famous artists including the notorious Flying Förtress, paint canvases live which will be auctioned off on the same night for the world’s largest orphan charity, SOS Children.

On Friday, December 7, there will be exclusive appearances by German art duo, Herakut (GER), Bristol based Mr Jago (UK) and Flying Förtress (GER), who will be performing live at Cargo from 3p.m., with an auction commencing at 6p.m. Audiences can tune in from around the world to watch the live art auction, which will be broadcast in real-time over the internet to allow buyers to bid online via the auction site.

An auction catalogue featuring the lots will be available for download via the Evolving Styles website. For further information, bidding instructions, artists and event news, please visit www.evolvingstyles.com

Not a fan for transfering blogs to blogs, but I found this meaningful. Alot of our artist friends contributed to this charity event, and it is for a good cause. Check it out if you have time. And if you are not in London, hey, you can bid online.

Interview on Format

Got busy working on next year's program once I got back to base. The Europe trip was short but very insightful. I always treat these short trips as a form of "recharge", and as always, I come back with more fresh projects and ideas. Thanks for everyone who took their time out to hang out while I was there. I'll be back in no time.

So, here we are, December. My Dec schedule is already meaningfully filled, looking forward to the last month of 2007, and bringin' on '08. 2007 went by quite quickly on retrospect, did we lose a few months in between?? The years before felt longer... Maybe I slept through a few months... I am not sure. 2008 looks promising though.

Now is a good time to ask yourself; What have you accomplished in 2007?

The interview I did with Format Magazine went online a few days ago. Thanks to Jesse for having me on there.

前阵子被加拿大Format志访问。几天前上线了。

42 Below YING YANG

P1090147 (141k image)
YING YANG is considered the oldest bar in Shanghai, and its owner Kenny celebrated the 11th anniversary of "YY" in style.

No red carpets, no media invites, no flashy DJs. What we got was a crowd of many many good friends and customers of Kenny's and alot of vodka-cocktails brought to you by the folks from 42Below.

P1090142 (104k image)
The party took up both floors of Ying Yang, with the busier music downstairs, and a singer plus pianoist performing upstairs in the lounge. Very amazing vocals, by the way. This is perhaps one of the "coolest" parties we have since in Shanghai this year, because it was authentic, and low-key.

The dudes at 42Below helped organized this party for Kenny, and they knew what they were doing. Very subtle logo hits, you won't find any hard-sell 42Below adverts laid out on a table or whatever. I actually had to look through the whole place to find one complete logo, and it was hiding at a corner downstairs. Not too many sponsors do that nowadays.

(more photos of YY after the jump)

Beigels on Brick Lane

P1080286 (139k image)
Tasted some of the best beigels there is across the street from our London shop. Salt Beef Beigels, what else can I say. That's the one. When you visit our store on Brick Lane, dont forget to grab a beigel for the road.

GSUK对面就是2家出名的Beigel店。每天排队买beigel的人都超多。他们的Salt Beef Beigel真的美味得出奇。太美味了,到Brick Lane不妨一试。
