China Unicom Design Competition
Today started at 8am. I was barely, just barely, awake.

Went to the venue with DTL, who was also flew in to Beijing to be on the judges panel. The event was hosted in Marco Polo Hotel, quite nicely set up, that we must give props to Ms. Fion Feng and her crew. I was later told that the setup started from mid-night til this morning. So if I thought I didn¡¯t have enough sleep, they got it even worse.

The MC was this pretty lady from TV, I really didn¡¯t catch her name, I must apologize. (it was really a bit too early for me to get into the mood of things). But anyways, she got it all together, and did a great job throughout the day.

Later in the afternoon, after our judging, the official press conference was hosted, the CEO of China Unicom, Li Kang, was on hand for the occasion. 20 winners were announced, and they get all expense paid trip to Tokyo. All 20 of them. Congratulations you all, you guys deserve it. Thanks for showing up, coming out to support such a design competition.

Cheers to everything involved with this event. Lots of hard work went in the back. Wang Lu, Fion, and many others were the real heroes of the event. Cheers!!

DTL, the respected Master.

When I said DTL, you guys thought he was some hip ass Chinese rapper, didn¡¯t¡¯ you?! WRONG!
DTL is Master Dai Tie Lang. He¡¯s the a much respected animation artist in Chinese history. He¡¯s 77 years old this year. He is a healthy, humorous, down to earth chain smoker. I just named him DTL for kicks. Not many people know his name, but if we say the works (cartoon) that he did in the past, people go crazy. We said ¡°Captain Black Cat was designed by Master Dai¡¡± and people went ¡°OH!!! YES!!! That¡¯s was you?! WOW!!¡± I heard this a million times this weekend. He started animation in China around 1953 in China. ¡°Captain Black Cat¡±, a story about this Black Cat Policeman chasing off bad guys, received foreign recognition in the 80¡¯s. It became a cartoon series that many Chinese kids grew up watching.
Master Dai, thanks for spending so much time with me this weekend, teaching me the way of the force. Yes, I belong to the dark side as well. Hope to see you again soon.

Sushi place

The event ended around 5pm after the 2 press conferences. I hopped into the taxi and went to CHEESE to say hi. Almost got the pair of AFFA x Visvim Serra, but Zhang Chang was saying that he wanted to keep it for himself for the winter, so I let it go. Haha. It was good chatting with Zhang Cheng. After a long day, I wanted some sushi, so I paid a visit to the sushi restaurant in the same complex as CHEESE. SOHO area, in the number 9 building. Some serious sashimi going on there. The chiefs there were really cool. Thanks for the hospitality. I think I¡¯ve found my new Beijing sushi staple. I¡¯ll be back to this joint for sure.

47 Gallery Cafe

Took an one-hr cab ride to see Estelle at 47 Gallery. As mentioned, 47 is a gallery slash caf¨¦. So Estelle setup another dinner for me and two other friends. That was my second dinner¡ But the food was good though, thanks Estelle. The conversations were more than interesting. Much ideas and collabo surfaced, which is always good. See you again soon, Estelle.

Dino & WZL

On my last day in Beijing, I hooked up with Dino from PUR for tea. WZL joined us mid-way. Dino has the coolest jeans shop in the city. Definitely worth keeping our eyes on. These friends are reasons why I like going to Beijing nowadays, just chatting with them made the trip worthwhile.
I walked into the airport and some guy tapped my shoulder. It was Yansong Ma. He was going to Shanghai as well, too bad we weren¡¯t on the same flight. See you in SH, Yansong.
