BERENJENA - IS HERE!!

Remix Squad / Eyescream Mag.

Eric from the REMIX TAIPEI crew sent over the Taipei street brand’s newest trucker cap. REMIX is the most active streetwear outfit in Taiwan today, and they just keep bringin’ out the good shit. Not a fan of multi-colored rainbow stuff, this black/white REMIX SQUAD trucker can get alot of milage in my wardrobe.

Mad thanks, Eric. Join the REMIX SQUAD today!

The latest issue of EYESCREAM Magazine hitted the stands in Japan. Hiroshi Fujiwara on the cover, and Fragment Design features inside. Don't miss this one.

Seeing blue...

I've been looking at the world through blue lenses for years now, I'm quite use to everything being a little blue in my eyes by now. My new pairs of prescribed opticals just arrived this afternoon. Got this NBHD x Fragment frame from Neighborhood during my last Tokyo visit, finally had the yellow lenses taken out and replaced them with blue shades. Now, this is officially mine. Need a few days getting my eyes adjusted to these though.

Thanks Brigitte for your help.

Playing with different box designs at the studio in this afternoon's meeting. A few new projects to be launched next month. Nowadays, box visuals are sometimes as important as the item inside itself, afterall, the whole "package" makes up the product.

Endo in Shanghai

Devilock's Endo paid me a visit from Tokyo last week. Being his first time in Shanghai, we took him out for a quick tour. Took him to see some bits and pieces of the old Shanghai, and of course, some tourists locations were involved... It has been a while since my visits to these places as well, at times, I forget how beautiful these places are.

It was great seeing you again, Endo. Take care.

The team has been busy working on a few new projects in time for the CHINA DESIGN NOW exhibition to be held at V&A Museum in London. This is one of the items, Monster Kar by Monster Kar. This is one of those characters that I fall in love with at first sight. Now, we have made them.

Gary, here’s to you.

TLP 10" Teddy Troop

Teddy Troop is always a dramatic release, and this one was no different. The long awaited 10 incher Teddy Troop by The London Police finally made its presence on our online shop. Folks who read this site often should need no introduction of the artist and this figure series. For those who don't already know the artist,.. go google it! Chaz, it was a pleasure working with you, peace!

I've been slacking off on my posts in recent weeks, mainly because we have a few projects to catch up on, and also due to having visitors coming to the city. But blog posting seems to be taking up alot of time in the past year, and will continue this year as well. Internet blogs have became venues for self expressions and information deliveries. I already have 4 blogs out there, but here goes the 5th one on Kix-Files.

GAB

My best friend Gabriel Tang dropped by Shanghai from LA last week, and it was our first meet up in 2 years. His stay was way too short, only 48 hrs, so we had to pack as much "play time" in between as possible. It is always nice to catch up with old buddies, especially the ones you knew back from your teen-years. Gabriel, it was great seeing you again, hope to catch you again either in LA or you coming back to Shanghai for more.

Cheers, brother.

The Running Man

Nike's AirMax95 is definitely one of my favorite models of all time, and this latest edition is even more special because it was designed by our Netherlands connection PARRA. Titled "The Running Man", this pair of kicks will be available at Patta and various Nike quickstrike accounts. Got this info from Slam x Hype, thanks James.

Parra, congratulations on this piece. And your figure will be ready soon as well.

CNY / HK / NB576

Spent the past week here in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year. A little kick-back-relaxing-time for me. CNY is a special time for the Chinese, especially for the folks in the Mainland. Alot of Mainlanders work far away from their hometowns. And CNY is the only long enough holiday for them to go home and reunite with their families and friends. CNY is an emotional time for alot of them.

I went back to Hong Kong also for an emotional union. I came back to meet, Hailey, my sister's new born. An adorable baby girl to say the least. :-)

Of course, what's a HK visit without kix-shopping??!! Here's my new love: Red-checker Patterned 576 by New Balance. A great pair to go with blue jeans.

I'm out

YUP, I was right yesterday, we didn't get anything done today!

Everyone just kinda lazied out waiting for the clock to hit 6pm. Then everyone vanished. O well, we'll do this next year... :-) I did manage to check up on a few production today, so, by calculation, we'll still have a few new items to be dropped in early March.

Have you got your Bukas yet? Better cop them soon. Gotta make room for the next wave of goods coming up.

Going to relax with family over the next few days, so don't expect any sort of toy news for the next week or so. You won't get any, Eddi is on sick-leave. "sick of work". :-P

Called up a few old buddies to meet up a few drinks over the next few days, looking forward to it.

Everyone, have a happy Chinese New Year, no matter you are Chinese or not, doesn't matter. Is our excuse for a long holiday.

Puma & Random Thoughts

Puma Mid, low key comfort. I have been enjoying this pair of soles this past week. A slight change of pace from my usual lineup of kicks.

Officially the last night of work tomorrow, I doubt we'll get anything done tomorrow, but what da hell, let's try to get as much done as possible. After tomorrow, I'm gone. A full week of family gathering non-sense we call "New Year" holidays... Me? I just wanna get outta here for a week. No plastic samples, no paint job tests, no nothing.

Once we come back from the holidays, we'll be offering the much awaited TLP 10" Teddy Troops via our website. Shipping has been an issue with us recently, so we'll be shipping out all TT Pacs at one go after the holidays, customers who have placed their orders, pls hang tight for a while longer, your troops will be with you soon.

I've been reading through a few message boards, and some folks are already talking about our new TT release, which was designed by pop art icon Frank Kozik. There are always mixed opinion about Frank's work. I won't want to get into all that. I don't think it is fair to pass judgments on one's design when the designer doesn't really have a need to explain to the world why he did a certain piece. The old saying goes "if you don't dig it, just don't get it". This has always been true towards adFunture products. We never go blow a million bucks on advertising or to make mega cross promotions just to get more eyeballs on our goods. We are a tight outfit, where we are catering to a niche group of collectors and fans. We decide our production run according to our own judgment of how many people we are catering to on each item. We only work with artists/designers where we believe in, believe in "what" can be for various reasons. "sales", "meaning", etc.

We reached out to Fortress way back in 2003. There was never a toy done by him at that time, he wasn't big in Hong Kong back then neither. I saw his works, and was deeply attracted, so I got in touch with him, and decided to make the Teddy Troops into a figure series. No real research was done on how popular he was or will be. It was a gut feeling. This is the same way we have been choosing which artists to work with from day one. Of course, today, the world of vinyl is way more complicated, but we still want to stick with this method, this "gut feel" decision making method. I'm proud to say that we didn't "miss" too many times in the past 6 years. Fortress being one of our best decisions ever. I thank him for his help throughout these years.

Frank. While some would question his creativity when it comes to skin designs, I think we should look at this whole thing from a grander view. CAN this guy design? Look at all of his works as a whole, and I think you'd have a positive answer. I myself do not question if he can design, because I saw the evidents pointing to a big "hell yeah". Why does he repeatingly uses the same designs when it comes to figures? Not so true. He has designed a lot of toys using different designs. He does, however, uses similar looking designs for various "platform toys". What some of them do share was a common theme. Anarchy, smoking, communisim, etc. I personally look at them as themes.

Kozik's "Anarchy" can be looked at as a themed collection. The collection is trying to get spreaded onto as many places or platforms as possible. Although Kozik is not a graffiti artist, one can say that he's "bombing" with the Anarchy theme. Sticking it anywhere possible, everything if possible.

Besides Kozik himself, this whole Anarachy collection will go down in art design history as an icon on its own.

Doesn't Obey uses his Giant face the same way? Is he innovative?

I think if you compare the two artists' body of work, you will see that Frank might be the better man.

Kaws with his cross-eyes? Alot of peeps were screaming bordem. However, characters by Kaws without the cross-eyes might be dismissed, because people can't immediately relate those characters to Kaws. People do need some symbols or common themes to relate to some artists' works. I don't want to get into a Kaws discussion, because I don't want people to read me the wrong way. But I would like to say that I personnally like his latest figure Hasheem. Some folks, again, have a different opinion about the Hasheem make-over, but I think that character conversion was done very nicely. Imagine, IF YOU WERE asked to do the conversation with your usual style, how far can YOU take Hasheem? And what if this new Hasheem by Kaws doesn't have the cross-eye, would YOU buy it?

Truth of the matter is, a Kaws toy without the cross-eye has never been proven to be able of being sold out in under 10mins.

Anyways, I'm sidetracking.

Back to the Kozik TT. We made it for the people who do enjoy the Anarachy Series and Teddy Troops Series. And believe it or not, there are alot of people out there who likes the Anarachy mission.

Well, at least, I believe it.

This is not a start of the Teddy Troops Series going "mainstream", although we are working with a few artists that are more active in the vinyl scene. Is not a bad thing, and it certainly is not the wrong thing to do. Will Teddy Troop become a fad in 8 months?

We don't know. We do know, however, Teddy Troops will be growing very visibly in 2008. It is time. It is its time.

Troops, are you ready for the ride?
