10/21/2007: "The Suitman, Rostarr, and Jose Parlar"
A few of us were gathered at 1933 this past weekend, because a few friends were coming into town and would like to sit at a round table and have a creative exchange. By "few", I meant about 35 people....
Young Kim, aka "Suitman", came to Shanghai with a few friends before their exhibition in Hong Kong next week. Whenever someone ask me about "performing arts", the Suitman was always on top of my mind. He has exhibited in many places and countries, including Alife NYC and Agnes b. gallery. A very generous gentleman, and it was a great pleasure to finally meet him.
ROSTARR was one of the guys that came with Young. His art is ill. That's all I can say. He didn't say much during his "presentation", and he put on his video of him drawing instead. "Letting the work speaks for itself" was right on point. All you had to do is watch him draw, you'll know he is right up there, enough said.
Deanne Cheuk showed up and showed her fine works as well. I'm sure alot of people have already heard of Deanne, or, at least seen her works. This lady named one of the top 50 creatives in the world by The Face magazine, "A leader" by Flaunt Magazine, a "Bright Light" by Creativity Magazine and "The fashion world's darling of the moment" by the Canadian National Post. Her illustrations are regularly commissioned by magazines including BlackBook, Flaunt, Nylon, and Cosmo Girl. She has been commissioned to illustrate portraits of Georgio Armani, John Galiano, Mos Def, and Deborah Harry. Deanne has art directed and designed 12 magazines, including her self published Mu, Big, and Tokion. Her clients are as diverse as David Carson, Urban Outfitters, and Levi's Strauss. She has designed signature ranges for Levi¡¯s Strauss Japan, Abahouse, @k, Unifa and FARAIM, and key pieces for Oki-Ni, M-One-11, SoftCore and Tsubi. She is renowned for her non-profit contributor based graphic 'zine, 'Neomu' which was the first publication of its kind. 2005 saw the release of her first book, 'Mushroom Girls Virus'. Sick huh?
I was so drawn to her presentation, I didn't even remember to take out my camera.
Last but not least, Jose Parla. His calligraphy, the layers he put on his canvases, damn, I was speechless. A soft spoken gentleman who pays alot of attention on how walls displays "human markings". Pictured here with our girl Sice.
And Sice, of course, is our Mainland rep when it comes to underground graffiti. This shy looking girl surprised everyone. Always.
