08/20/2006: "DTL, the respected Master."

When I said DTL, you guys thought he was some hip ass Chinese rapper, didn’t’ you?! WRONG!

DTL is Master Dai Tie Lang. He’s the a much respected animation artist in Chinese history. He’s 77 years old this year. He is a healthy, humorous, down to earth chain smoker. I just named him DTL for kicks. Not many people know his name, but if we say the works (cartoon) that he did in the past, people go crazy. We said “Captain Black Cat was designed by Master Dai…” and people went “OH!!! YES!!! That’s was you?! WOW!!” I heard this a million times this weekend. He started animation in China around 1953 in China. “Captain Black Cat”, a story about this Black Cat Policeman chasing off bad guys, received foreign recognition in the 80’s. It became a cartoon series that many Chinese kids grew up watching.

Master Dai, thanks for spending so much time with me this weekend, teaching me the way of the force. Yes, I belong to the dark side as well. Hope to see you again soon.
